Fun art activities and explorations abound on Family Day at the Kelowna Art Gallery
February 4, 2016 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery invites families of all shapes and sizes to join us this Family Day - Monday, February 8 - from 10 am to 4 pm for a full day of art activities, family-friendly tours, and special programming for children and adults.
Come in out of the cold and explore the fascinating exhibitions on view before getting creative with a hands-on art activity. Shows to see include The Artist Herself: Self-Portraits by Canadian Historical Women Artists, which includes two paintings by Emily Carr, and also Where the Heart Is, by Salmon Arm-based artist Amy Modahl.
Families will have the opportunity create their own futuristic prints inspired by the mysterious capsules that have shown up in downtown Kelowna as part of the Fossils from the Future public art project. To do so, participants will be encouraged to take inspiration from the exhibitions on view and consider what sorts of objects they would put in a capsule and send into the past. All supplies will be provided, and the Gallery's helpful staff will be on hand to assist.
The cost for all this is $4 per participant, and includes admission and a tour of the exhibitions. The gallery will also be offering postcards and free maps for self-guided tours of the Fossils from the Future public art pieces that are located outdoors near the gallery.
Another fun activity families can take part in is The Selfie Project. This is a free activity that invites the public to paint, draw, or photograph their own self-portrait. All of the submitted portraits will be on display in the Gallery's Art Lab until April 3, when The Artist Herself exhibition closes.
Family Day also marks a one-day-only sale on one-year Family Memberships at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Save 15%, and for a little over $50, give your family the gift of art all year around.
The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in the heart of the Cultural District in downtown Kelowna.
