Director of Finance and Operations
The Opportunity

The Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day business operations of the Museum including financial reporting and analysis; human resources; overall operation of the museum facility; information technology; and visitor services. Reporting to the CEO and working with the Board of Directors and other senior staff, the Director of Finance and Operations works to strengthen the operation of the Museum.

The Museum of Vancouver connects Vancouverites to each other and connects Vancouver to the world. Programs, exhibitions, and collections bring people together to explore historic and contemporary issues, envision the future, and deepen our understanding of Vancouver. The museum focus encompasses history, design, visual arts, architecture, urban planning, music, new media, fashion, photography, popular culture. An enthusiastic civic advocate, the Museum is an independent, not-for-profit, charitable organization dedicated to inspiring a socially connected, civically engaged city.
MOV is one of Vancouver's most important cultural spaces and the City of Vancouver is a vital partner. The Museum manages a collection of over 70,000 objects for the City of Vancouver, and the City contributes to MOV through the provision of its building, building services and an annual operating grant.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management
* Create and manage the organization's approximately $2M budget in a collaborative effort involving Board, staff and CEO.
* Oversees the day-to-day control of accounting activities including, monthly, quarterly and year-end reporting, financial reports and analysis for the CEO, Finance Committee, Board of Directors, Auditors, and others as required.
* Main liaison with independent auditors to ensure a successful year-end audit.
* Continuously review and communicate revenue, cash and expense results and projections with the CEO, Board of Directors and staff and serve as the main contact for the Finance Committee of the Board.
* Supervise full-time Accounting Coordinator and part-time and auxiliary accounting clerks.
Business Operations
* Manages the overall operation of the museum including liaising with the City of Vancouver's facilities, security and other partners as required.
* Manages the IT system, telephone system and other relevant contracts to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in MOV's operations.
* Responsible for planning for capital improvements and expenditures, also in consultation with the City of Vancouver and other partners in the building.
* Manages front-of-house staff to ensure high quality service delivery to customers.
Human Resources
* Oversees human resource including managing and executing employee relations, classification and job descriptions, compensation and benefits, performance management, recruitment, training and development activities and payroll and benefits.
* Overall responsibility, with the CEO, for collective bargaining with CUPE 15.
* Oversees volunteer recruitment, management and stewardship with other staff.
Planning, Management and Leadership
* Work with the Board, CEO and other members of the senior team to undertake strategic and business planning and evaluation for the organization based on key metrics.
* Provide support to and attend meetings of the Board of Directors, Finance Committee and others as required.
* Take a leadership role in the organization, acting for the CEO as required.
* Supervise the Senior Manager of Operations, the Accounting Coordinator and others as deemed necessary.
Required Knowledge, Ability and Skills
* Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and management skills including a collaborative, team-oriented work style.
* Strong organizational and planning skills with an ability to set priorities and manage multiple responsibilities.
* Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
* Demonstrated ability to create complex organizational budgets, produce financial reports including all month-end and year-end close, cash flows, and all financial analysis.
* Knowledge of Sage accounting software.
* Knowledge of not-for-profit accounting preferred.
Education and Experience
* Minimum of a Bachelor of Arts of Bachelor of Science in business, accounting, finance or a similar field. MBA or Master's level preferred.
* Seven years senior leadership experience, preferably in a non-profit environment, including a proven track record in budgeting and financial management, project and facilities management.
* Experience managing IT and other systems.
* Experience managing human resources in a unionized environment.

* This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
