[BCMA] Fee for Research Policy

Hi Lee,

Our written policy is that everyone gets 30 minutes of research for free. Those who wish to make use of staff or volunteers to do the research for them (rather than coming into the archives to do their own) pay $20/hour plus tax after that. Those who choose to hire staff/volunteers can then set the number of hours they are willing to pay for. We find this works well with both developers/businesses and individuals. It also compensates the museum for staff and volunteers hours spent working on an inquiry.

We also have set fees for photocopies and archival photographs (depending on use of photograph). With obituaries and genealogical inquiries, we ask that the individual make a donation of their own choosing to the museum.

  We are looking for examples of policies, forms and fees that your organization might charge for historical research. At this point our general unwritten policy is that basic research for individual is done for free, but we increasingly are facing request from commercial interest including property developers and their consultants.
