Collections Assistant - Full Time, Term (one year, with the possibility of extension)

The Kelowna Museums Society is seeking a Collections Assistant to join the Curatorial Dept. Under the direction of the Curatorial Manager, the Collections Assistant performs specialized, professional work involving the acquisition, deaccession, documentation, organization, preservation, research and public access to the museums' multi-disciplinary artifacts. The position requires growing and overseeing the Collections Volunteers and working with the public on occasion.


Main Duties

*         Maintain and update the artifact register

*         Research, catalogue, and digitize artifacts using standard data entry rules

*         Meet with members of the public to assist with object donations and answer donation inquiries

*         Orient, train and oversee collections volunteers

*         Prepare new donations for presentation to the Collections Committee

*         Practice proper care and handling and carry out basic conservation techniques

*         Assist in writing collections' policies and procedures

*         Work with the Education and Programing Dept. to build the teaching collection

*         Other duties as assigned


Requirements

*         Post-secondary education in Museum Studies, with a focus on Registration, Collections Management or Conservation
*         Minimum two years' experience working as a Collections Manager, Registrar, or Conservator, or other relevant experience.

*         Minimum two years' experience working in depth with a museum database, preferably PastPerfect

*         Attention to detail

*         Strong communication, research, and computer skills

*         Must enjoy working with the public and with volunteers

*         Satisfactory Criminal record check

*         Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License

*         Valid First Aid Certificate is an asset

Salary: $17.00 per hour to start
