Cold War era to be sure. Not likely an RCAF emergency ration as they were marked RCAF, likewise for the Canadian Army rations of that era. It is possible that it could have been from one of the thousands of kits put together for what they called "Emergency Preparedness". These were kits assembled by the Government of Canada during the height of the Cold War and stored right across Canada in various Government buildings and warehouses. Think Doctor Strange Love and their mine shaft gap. During my short and illustrious military career with the 12th Vancouver medical Coy at Jericho we helped to go through one of these kits in 1992 or 93 making upgrades and looking for spoilage and or repairs and replacements of worn or damaged components. Water, medical kits, blankets (in many cases WWII vintage wool), stretchers (also WWII vintage) etc. etc. One such kit, (and they would almost fill five ton truck) was kept at hangar two of the Abbotsford Airport up until the mid-late 1970's. I discovered it as a young pre- teen poking around the hangar in the days when it was still Transport Canada and before the airport had been re-activated for commercial traffic. You should be able to more information on these kits from Emergency Preparedness Canada.

Hope this helps. Michael.

Hi Michael,

Since you were such a big help with the last request, I thought you might have an idea. No worries if you don't. These are the kinds of things that BCMA sends out all the time.

Lisa

Hello fellow museums.

I am attaching two photos of an item that came in to the museum today that we can't seem to trace. It was found in a bunker-like room in the basement of an RCMP outpost along the AlCan highway with a case of biscuits as well. The biscuits are forthcoming to the museum, but the donor says they are still "edible" but then so is old shoe leather with enough poutine on it.

The only thing we can find to date this can is a date stamp on the top which reads "4" and "1 SEP 1967". Norfolk Canneries Ltd appears to be a company from the UK.

There is no corrosion to the can which still feels like it has H2O as its contents. Its seals are still very much intact.

Any ideas if this was a civilian or military C-Ration element? Or just a simple survival/camping item? Seems awful late in the date to be a cold war bomb shelter item.

Any leads or suggestions would be welcome as it is cool none the less and we would love to display it if it does have some military connection. It was given to the woman who just gave it to us simply because it was a unique item and they didn't have any history other than where it was found.

See photos attached.
