*ASIAN CANADIAN HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS 2016 Next week!
*

*Chinese Poetry and Asian Masks at the Langham 27-28 May *

**

Five years ago several residents of Kaslo got together around the idea
of a Kaslo and West Kootenay celebration of Canada’s annual Asian
Canadian Heritage Month -- May. We all enjoy Spring celebrations, and
perhaps more so when they bring the possibility of expanding one’s
understanding of neighbours and cultures that are growing more
significance in our lives; and especially when an opportunity to taste
others’ foods is included. From its very 1^st year this event has been
almost overwhelmingly successful, and this May the Langham continues its
new tradition with /Red Pine/ and an exhibition of Asian Masks.

*On Friday 27 May at 7:00- 8:30 PM* the highly acclaimed translator of
Chinese poetry and travel writer /Red Pine /will read some of his
favourite poets and excerpts from his latest book, /Finding Them Gone/,
a pilgrimage to the homes and resting places of more than 40 famous
Chinese poets. His considerable global following, including in China,
are particularly attracted by his direct and pithy rendering of the
poetry and an ability to express ancient sentiments and insights that
also reflect and interpret our contemporary condition. In both his
translations and travel writing we are treated to a deep knowledge of
Chinese culture. After the reading, Asian desserts and teas will be served.

FREE to all

*Saturday 28 May at 10:00-11:30 AM */Red Pine/ will talk on the /Heart
Sutra/.Since this text appeared 1,500 years ago, it is chanted daily at
Buddhist temples throughout East Asia. Wrapped inside its three-dozen
lines are the teachings of all major sects of Buddhism./Red Pine/ will
explicate its teachings line by line with hand out copies of the text
for everyone to follow along. A luncheon of Asian food and teas will
follow.

Tickets $18 for this Saturday /HEART SUTRA /event and Asian lunch

All other events are free.

*This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s leading
translators of Chinese poetry and a deeply informed commentator on
China’s culture.*
