explore our newest exhibit: false pretenses by bill edmonds

The City of Port Coquitlam welcomes the public to the opening reception of False Pretenses by Bill Edmonds on Friday, June 3rd from 7-9pm in the Michael Wright Art Gallery, 2253 Leigh Square Place, Port Coquitlam. The exhibit is free and the reception includes complimentary refreshments and light snacks.

The title False Pretenses was inspired by the definition of the slang term "catfish" - someone who pretends to be someone they're not on social media to create false identities. For the past two years, Edmonds has been exploring the anonymity of the Internet and the relationships formed by strangers online. He experienced this first-hand while searching for portrait subjects online. He would make contact with random individuals through Internet chat rooms, asking the strangers to send him a photo so he could paint their portrait in return. In many cases, he suspected the image was not the person's own, and he soon discovered there was an agenda attached to the photograph.

He sketched and painted the images on Plexiglas panels, often adding scraps of texts sent to him along with the original photo. The paintings were then photographed and printed on rag paper. As part of this exhibit, Edmonds will also create an installation of a random stranger sitting in front of a computer monitor. It is Edmonds hope that this exhibit will generate an interesting dialogue of space, time and memory in the local community and more over open up a wide range of discussions about the idea of identity.
