Job Posting: Gallery Education Assistant, Surrey Art Gallery



Are you passionate about art education and want to develop skills in curriculum design and educational program development? Can you demonstrate knowledge of contemporary art and Indigenous art practices?

Surrey Art Gallery is offering an 18-week Gallery Education Assistant position for a candidate that has completed post-secondary coursework in education, museum education, art education, Aboriginal education, and/or a related discipline. This position is designed to provide work experience in gallery education research and development practices at one of Canada's most vibrant visual arts institutions.



Duties include: participating in meetings with local Indigenous artists and educators; conducting research on contemporary Indigenous art practices; assisting in the development of learner-centered educational materials, including lesson plans and educational activities for use in schools; supporting planning educational workshops for teachers and students; working with staff in the development of promotional materials and initiatives; and contributing to the creation of digital presentations and hand-outs.



We are seeking an individual who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and thrives in situations requiring meeting deadlines and adapting to change. The successful candidate will be a creative, detail-oriented individual with: strong knowledge and experience in art education theories and practices; broad knowledge of contemporary art and art history; excellent oral and written communication skills; solid administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills; effective problem-solving skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

This position will be for up to 18 weeks, scheduled to conclude on March 31, 2017 (up to 7 hours per day to maximum of 30 hours per week). This is an auxiliary, union position with a rate of $21.26 per hour plus 12% in lieu of vacation and benefits.



Funded in part through Heritage Canada's Young Canada Works Building Careers in Heritage, applicants need to meet specific eligibility requirements including: be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment, are an unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate, and will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with this position.
