Get into the spirit with Museum Happy Hour
at the Royal BC Museum
VICTORIA, BC - Bored with your book club? Scrabble night feeling a little lame? Try out a new recurring date-Museum Happy Hour at the Royal BC Museum. You won't find a better combination for your post-work wind down than museum + friends + drinks.
Chill by the ice wall next to the Woolly Mammoth, hit the cobblestone streets in Old Town, snap a sea lion selfie in the coastal diorama and dance with bears in the forest display. Get an insider's look and see the museum after dark.
"People often come to the museum in school groups and then don't visit again until they bring their own kids," says Head of Learning, Janet MacDonald. "Museum Happy Hour is for young professionals who are in that gap and are looking for a unique, unconventional museum experience."
Museum Happy Hour runs on Thursdays in November from 5pm-7pm and is $10 per person (10 percent member discount). Each features fun interactive programs based on a theme and set amid the museum's galleries and exhibits.
November 10: "On the Home Front"
Step back into 1940s and contribute to the war effort on the home front. Gather around the stand-up radio and listen to news of the war (from the CBC Digital Archives), learn to dance at the Train Station in Old Town, watch short films (from the National Film Board) from the era in the Majestic Theatre, knit socks for soldiers, hear a player piano and live pianist perform 1940s tunes, discover what to do during an air raid, find out how to black out your home, talk to actors in period costume and see a live demonstration of war-time hair, make-up and outfits.
November 17: "New Ways of Looking"
Pick up a little extra knowledge about the natural world to amp up your conversational value at cocktail parties.
Use interactive technology to experience the Natural History gallery from a new perspective, by being among the first to try our new augmented reality app. You'll never see our Mammoth the same way again.
Head over to the coastal diorama and listen to nine original soundscape compositions from the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre's<http://www.bamfieldmsc.com/> summer 2016 Acoustic Ethnography course. Recorded on location, these works also use archival sounds from the Bamfield Historical Society<http://www.bamfieldhistory.com/> and sounds from the deep ocean collected by Ocean Networks Canada<http://www.oceannetworks.ca/>. Enjoy these soundscapes from above, below and beyond coastal BC.
November 24: "Press Record"
Stop in for a drink and a little taste of history.
Fancy yourself the next Ira Glass? Record an oral history and your interview might become part of our new podcast.
Feeling more like sitting back and relaxing with a good film? Enjoy home movies from our Archives in the Majestic Theatre.
