Curatorial Intern
Location: Fort St. John North Peace Museum, 9323-100th Street, Fort St. John, BC V1J 4N4
Wage: $14.00/hour
Start Date: October 3, 2016
End Date: March 31, 2017 (26 weeks)
Daily Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm (one hour lunch from 1 pm to 2 pm)
Weekly Hours: 35 hours
Job Description
The curatorial intern will be responsible for cataloguing a collection of over 400 negatives taken by Rudy Schubert during the construction of the Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia. This intern will organize, scan, and catalogue these negatives. The intern will develop an exhibit around them which will premiere in the fall of 2017.
The intern will carry out the following duties:
Collections Management:
· Learning museum procedures concerning the care and safe handling of artefacts and archival materials
· Learning how to accession, scan, and re-house negatives
· Scanning negatives
· Learning the Fort St. John North Peace Museum's cataloguing procedures
· Cataloguing and researching negatives
· Working with community members and archival material to improve knowledge of the locations/events featured in Schubert's negatives
Exhibit Development:
· Researching the Alaska Highway and Rudy Schubert
· Preparing a research report, exhibit brief, storyline, and design plan for an exhibit of the Schubert photographs
· Selecting and grouping photographs for this exhibit
· Writing and editing an exhibit script
· Developing a small interactive activity for the exhibit
· Learning how to operate the cash register and interact with museum visitors
General Museum Tasks & Networking:
· Carrying out the opening and closing tasks required of museum staff
· Assisting the manager/curator with small tasks around the museum (collections management, conservation, exhibits, programs, 2017 events, etc.)
· Attending museum meetings and networking with Peace Region museums
Qualifications
The applicants for this position must have an interest in Canadian history and be willing to learn more about the Fort St. John - North Peace region. Candidates should enjoy meeting and interacting with the public. Applicants must be flexible, sociable, and work well with Museum staff and volunteers. Candidates need to be well organized, self-motivated, able to take direction, and able to work without constant direct supervision. These individuals must be responsible and mature. Excellent computer, research, and writing skills are required
This position is a Young Canada Works - Building Careers in Heritage Internship. Applicants must be between 16 and 30 years of age and be eligible for and registered under Young Canada Works. Candidates must have completed a college or university degree in museum studies, archival studies, history, or public history. This degree must have been completed in the two years before the October 3, 2016 start date. Experience in cataloguing and developing exhibits is an asset.
