Cannery Speakers' Series August 12 - A View from the Harbour
RICHMOND, BC - On Saturday, August 12th, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society presents the third program in its summer Speakers' Series, with a focus on how the fishing industry has changed over the past century. Don McLeod, former Canfisco Executive Vice President, presents A View from the Harbour, sharing the story of the Canadian Fishing Company through rarely seen photographs from the company archives that show its inner workings from their roots to present-day operations.
Founded in 1906, Canfisco's 111-year success story is rooted in local, wild salmon. Over the past century, increased government regulations, new technology, changing environmental conditions, global events, and consumer tastes have resulted in big changes to the commercial fishery. A look back at Canfisco's story will illustrate how the company adapted to these changing conditions.
The commercial fishing industry helped build Steveston Village and many other communities along Canada's vast coasts. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery NHS's feature exhibit, "The Pull of the Net: Commercial Fishing in Canada<http://gulfofgeorgiacannery.org/exhibits/the-pull-of-the-net-commercial-fishing-in-canada>" explores this important history. This summer, the Society is hosting a free Speakers' Series that delves deeper into the history of the fishing industry. The free presentation will be held in the Cannery's Boiler House Theatre from 2 to 3:30 pm. Seating is limited.
The Pull of the Net Speakers' Series is a recipient of the City of Richmond's Canada 150 grant initiative. Richmond Canada 150 ignites the passions of the citizens of Richmond in a multi-faceted, year-long celebration, honours Richmond's distinct and vibrant cultural diversity, and leaves lasting legacies that foster civic pride and carry the spirit of 150 into the future.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site of Canada is operated by the non-profit
Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, on behalf of Parks Canada.
