A morning with an Inventor

Spend a "Morning with an Inventor"
Are you fascinated by electricity? Do you like to create, to tinker, to putz around with machines and tools? Well, how about spending a morning exploring the inventions of Vernon's own, Mr. Garry Garbutt.

Mr. Garbutt is opening up his workshop for interested participants between the ages of 8 to 108 to check out his projects, re-creations of early electrical experiments, tesla engines, and fun experiments. This is an opportunity for the curious minded of all ages to learn and be inspired. Topics depend on participant's interests. Some potential topics are: tesla coils, steam engines, electrical devices, physics demonstrations, and gidgets and gadgets.

"A morning with an Inventor" is part of The Field School Series hosted by the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives who are teaming up with local businesses, organizations, and experts who have "historic skills."

The "Morning with an Inventor" is the second event of the Field School Series. Last November the Field School presented a demonstration on shaving with a straight blade at the Gentlemen's Shoppe. In late June a hands on field demonstration will be presented in partnership with Fieldstone Grainery on how to use a scythe, the traditional tool for harvesting wheat.

"I created the Field School to highlight and celebrate these great sources of historical practical knowledge we have in this community. It is one thing to talk about history, it is another thing entirely to do," says Museum Educational Coordinator, Gabriel Newman, who plans to make the field school an annual series.

Mr. Garbutt has a long history of collaborating with the Vernon Museum. He restored the old Post Office clock and Captain Shortts' engine that are on display in the Museum, and he has given presentations on Tesla's inventions which were very well received. "Garry loves to teach. As a self-taught expert he knows how important it is to share information. He hopes to inspire the next generation of inventors," adds Newman.

Three dates are being offered as he can only accommodate 6 people per session. "A Morning with an Inventor" takes place at Mr. Garbutt's Workshop on March 19th, 21st, and 23rd from 10:00 to 11:00am. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Vernon Museum.  Cost is $10/person.
