Fort St. John residents: plant yourself down for some botanical news
VICTORIA, BC-This week the Royal BC Museum's Curator of Botany, Dr. Ken Marr, is heading to Fort St. John for two free community events.
The events are part of the Royal BC Museum's PEACE project, which exists to collaborate, share knowledge and discuss environmental stewardship in North Eastern BC.
On June 14 and 15, Ken will host a Plant ID Workshop at the Fort St. John campus of Northern Lights College.
In this free hands-on workshop, Ken will review basic terminology, the use of plant ID "keys" and features you can use to ID plant families.
The workshop is suitable for both beginners and for specialists looking for a refresher in plant family identification. Invasive plant field staff, biologists interested in plant identification and field technicians will likely find this course interesting.
The workshop will take place in Room 154 of Northern Lights College's Fort St. John campus from 9:00 am-4:00 pm both days.
As the workshop is almost full, interested parties are requested to register as soon as possible by emailing peaceproject at royalbcmuseum.bc.ca<mailto:peaceproject at royalbcmuseum.bc.ca> or calling 250 793-5304.
On June 15, from 7:00-8:30 pm, Ken will provide a free lecture at the Fort St. John Library, entitled New Plant Discoveries from Northern BC's Alpine. Ken's presentation will feature landscapes in which he and his Royal BC Museum colleagues have collected rare plants, common plants and a pseudoflower.
No registration is required for this free public lecture. Both events are presented with the support of the W. Garfield Weston Foundation, the Royal BC Museum Foundation and the Northern Lights College Foundation.
This is the fourth visit by Royal BC Museum staff to North Eastern BC on behalf of the PEACE project in the past two years. Each visit focusses on community outreach, listening and sharing knowledge.
