A Legacy of Canadian Art opens at Kelowna Art Gallery

A Legacy of Canadian Art from Kelowna Collections
July 1 to October 15, 2017

June 28, 2017 - Kelowna, BC: A new exhibition opening on Canada Day at the Kelowna Art Gallery aims to take viewers on a journey through the past 150 years of visual art in Canada.

The exhibition, entitled A Legacy of Canadian Art from Kelowna Collections, has a unique local connection - the 80 works comprising the show were all borrowed from the homes and private collections of residents in the Kelowna area. Visitors can expect to see historical works by artists such as Cornelius Krieghoff, A.Y. Jackson, Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, A.J. Casson, Jack Bush, Bill Reid, Gershon Iskowitz, Alex Janvier, Jack Shadbolt, Daphne Odjig, and many others.

"We are so pleased to be able to work with guest curator Roger Boulet to organize this extraordinary exhibition," says Executive Director Nataley Nagy. "When considering how we might share in celebrating Canada's sesquicentennial we couldn't think of a better way than to look at the past 150 years through the eyes of Canadian artists."

The exhibition includes a wide variety of media. In addition to the many paintings, there are etchings, woodcuts, sculptures, wood carvings, stone work, and even an Early Canadian Red Ensign - one of Canada's first flags, fashioned from wool, linen, and hemp, circa 1868. The oldest work in the show is a landscape by Cornelius Krieghoff that he painted in 1859, while the most recent piece was completed in 1992 by B.C. artist Jack Shadbolt.

A beautiful 96-page full colour catalogue illustrating the works in the exhibition, and including an essay by curator, Roger H. Boulet, has been produced to accompany A Legacy of Canadian Art.

A Legacy of Canadian Art from Kelowna Collections is on view from July 1 to October 15, 2017. The exhibition is sponsored by Pushor Mitchell LLP and KF Aerospace, along with financial assistance from the Rogers' Family Charitable Trust.

A reception to celebrate the exhibition is planned for Saturday, July 15, from 1 to 3 pm. This event is free and open to the public to attend.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in the heart of the Cultural District in downtown Kelowna.
