The Haida Gwaii Museum is looking for two post-secondary students for
the positions of Digital Development Assistant and Museum Cultural
Interpreter Assistant from June 1 to August 31, 2017.
*1-Digital Development Assistant*
The Assistant will be part of the museum curatorial team to develop a
digital collection database. The Assistant will work with a computerized
software system to gather digital information via; photo reproduction,
scanning, digital photography and document reproduction. Occasional
assignments which will include assisting with the permanent collection
of the Haida Gwaii Museum and, assisting visitors and researchers in
gaining knowledge of Haida history and culture. Digitizing and scanning
of artifact and photo collection into a digital computer system. Assist
in museum website maintenance and upkeep. Update basic web pages and
develop web information content. The Assistant will assess archival
images (photographs, postcards, and slides) for conservation concerns,
scan images, develop an image library, and participate in the
development of a virtual exhibit. The Assistant will also participate
and support various aspects of the unit's activities including
acquisition of materials, accessioning, arrangement and description,
reference, and general outreach. Should be familiar with document
scanners, database software, and the use of the Internet.
*2-Museum Cultural Interpreter Assistant*
**
This position involves training for and delivering on interpretive
programs to museum visitors on a series of themes related to the
permanent collection and interpretive guide, as well as assist in new
public programs related to both permanent and temporary, currently being
developed for the museum. The Assistant will have a demonstrated
interest in the history and cultures of First Nations of the Pacific
Northwest, the Haida and Islands’ culture of Haida Gwaii. Candidates
will be interested in a future career in the heritage sector.Current
enrollment in post-secondary education in First Nations Studies,
Cultural Resource Management, Tourism and Marketing,
anthropology/archaeology, museums studies, or another related field.
Candidates should have experience in community-based, First Nation
focused/directed programming, public speaking, and customer service
skills. Candidate should have high degree of comfort speaking to large
and small groups of people from various cultural backgrounds.
Candidates should have the ability to work independently and as part of
a team. Fluency in English is required, ability to speak another
language may be an asset. All qualified applicants including women,
persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and Aboriginal peoples
are encouraged to apply for the position.
These positions are funded through the Young Canada Works Program (YCW)
the successful applicants must also meet the following criteria:
• is registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
• is legally entitled to work in Canada;
• is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or has refugee status
in Canada;
• is between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• has completed the candidate eligibility form prior to hiring;
• be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; and
• not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed
with YCW.
The wage for both positions is $ 18.00 per hour. Interested candidates
