MUSEUM ASSISTANT SUMMER POSITION
The Greater Vernon Museum and Archives has a solid reputation in our community and the North Okanagan. We also have the privilege of being listed as a top priority in the Greater Vernon Cultural Plan and we are only a few years away from expanding and getting a new facility. With this in mind our mandate is to educate community members, researchers and visitors, in an interesting and dynamic way, on the varied history and heritage of the Greater Vernon area; an area that is a hub for arts and culture.
Exciting changes are happening at the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives and we are looking for a fun and dynamic individual to join our team!
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:
The Museum Assistant will work to strengthen the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives' artefact collection, participate in exhibition development and production, contribute to outreach and community events, and have the opportunity to meet and network with other arts and culture professionals.
Working with the Registrar/ Curatorial Assistant, the Museum Assistant will participate in the following:
COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT
* Inventory and assess artefact collections; including those at our In-Spot facilities
* Assist in developing and organizing artefact collections
* Conduct basic object registration and conservation reporting
* Research object provenance and information
* Assist in making recommendations for deaccessioning
CURATORIAL SUPPORT:
* Help research, develop and redevelop our lasting, showcase and In-Spot exhibitions
* Assist in contacting and developing partnerships with local and regional cultural groups, in order to highlight how multiculturalism has contributed to the growth and development of Vernon and the North Okanagan
* Spend 1-2 days a week at our In-Spot Museums (Silver Star Mountain Museum and/ or Vernon Cadet Camp Museum)
OUTREACH AND NETWORKING
* Attend Museum booth at various events
* Assist with Vernon Mural Tours
* Help coordinate Museum's Canada 150 Multicultural Mural Rededication Celebration
GENERAL SUPPORT:
* Attend various in-house and external meetings
* Represent the Museum at special in-house and community events
* Other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Strong interest in Museum, Anthropology and/ or History related subjects and activities
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Good research and computer skills
* Good problem solving and multitasking abilities
* Flexible and organized
* Ability to work independently and as a team member
* Ability to work in different work environments
* Must have a valid B.C. Driver's license
ELIGIBILITY:
Must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee status in Canada
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
Been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student in the preceding semester
Must intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment
