** Culture Days at Leigh Square
------------------------------------------------------------

Culture Days is in full swing today here at Leigh Square and the PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives! Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation, and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

Tomorrow is the last day for Culture Days this year, so make sure to check out the Culture Days website (http://pocoheritage.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=18aac30645c5fc9550d8b4aa7&id=5a1dd1b647&e=2d71d33d13) and find free activities near you!

Our day kicked off with the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Tri-Cities' LINC 4 Saturday class joining us in the museum.

Fun performances from the Cutie Circle Ukulele Jamboree in Leigh Square. They got the group singing and grooving along before the Canada 150 Mosaic Unveiling.

The Canada 150 Mosaic was officially unveiled today! This mosaic is part of Port Coquitlam's Canada 150 legacy project and consists of 600 tiles hand painted by PoCo community members.

** "Sarah and Michael Explore Port Coquitlam"
------------------------------------------------------------

PoCo Heritage has collaborated with Art Focus, Friends of Leigh Square, and with various local writers and artists to create a children's history book! "Sarah and Michael Explore Port Coquitlam" is an illustrated collection of small stories about various people and events that make up the history of Port Coquitlam.

This book is truly a collaborative community project. PoCo Heritage supplied the historical research for this project, as well as secured funding through the PoCo Community Foundation Grant and a Friends of Leigh Square donation. Very talented local writers and artists then breathed fun and energy into this history and created a wonderful collection of stories.

The sales of this book will be used to create a bursary to further strengthen our community by helping to fund those interested in pursuing post-secondary education in culture, heritage, or the arts. For more information on the book launch on Saturday October 14th please see the Upcoming Events section of our newsletter.

Ongoing Exhibits

Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada
PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives

This exhibit is a nationally travelling exhibit produced by the Canadian Museum of History in partnership with the Terry Fox Centre, and is now in Terry's hometown of Port Coquitlam for you to experience!

This exhibit features panels exploring Terry's inspirational journey across Canada and the impact his unflagging spirit has had on Canadians, and the rest of the world. We are very proud to be able to offer this exhibit to our community and we hope that you will be able to make your way to the museum to see it!

This exhibit will be open to the public Monday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until November 29th.

Terry Fox: Hometown Legacy
PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives

Created as a complementary exhibit to "Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada", "Hometown Legacy" explores Terry's vision and legacy, and the deep connection Port Coquitlam has maintained to its hometown hero.

On display are objects, such as one of the Marathon of Hope T-shirts Terry wore while running across Canada and a scale replica of his prosthetic leg, as well as images and video interviews.

When you visit, make sure to check out our family-friendly interactive postcard activity. Draw a picture and write a letter about how Terry's journey has affected your life, or what inspires you about his story, or what you would tell him if you could. You can "mail" your postcard inside the museum where it will then be put on display for the rest of the exhibit.

The "Terry Fox: Hometown Legacy" exhibit will be open to the public Monday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until November 29th.

Canada 150 - "Port Coquitlam Then and Now"
Heritage Exhibit in City Hall

After attending a tour of City Hall, Ms. Joanne Howey assigned her students a very creative and artistic Socials project. The grade 4 and 5 students from Central Community Elementary School were to create a snapshot in time and compare what the newly create City of Port Coquitlam looked like in its early days, and what Port Coquitlam looks like now over 100 years later.

On display in City Hall are these wonderful creations which feature City Hall itself, technology and fashion through the century, Port Coquitlam homes and parks, changing transportation, and of course the City's Mayors!

This display series, started this year by PoCo Heritage to celebrate Canada 150, aims to connect the students of local elementary, middle, and high schools to history and culture by providing a creative space for direct engagement between art and heritage. This display is the third in this series. We hope to continue this series and invite more students and schools to participate!
