Location: Greater Vernon Museum & Archives, 3009 - 32nd Ave. Vernon, BC
Dates: Monday May 14, 2018
Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Admission: $5.00 at the door
Phone: 250-542-3142

The Greater Vernon Museum & Archives (GVMA) is excited to announce that the next Speaker Series presenter is retired Colonel Patrick M. Dennis, OMM, CD from Kitchner, ON. Col. (Ret'd) Dennis' presentation entitled 'Canadian Conscripts at War: 1918' will take place on Monday May 14, from 7-8 pm. Col. Dennis will speak about how conscripted soldiers (many of whom came from northern British Columbia) performed in combat, and provide heretofore unknown details regarding their historic contribution to the success of the Canadian Corps in the Great War.

Following the presentation, those in attendance will have the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of his recently published book 'Reluctant Warriors: Canadian Conscripts and the Great War' which investigates a fascinating and undocumented chapter in Canadian history. As Dennis explains, "During the 'Hundred Days' campaign of the First World War, over 30 percent of conscripts who served in the Canadian Corps became casualties. Yet, they were often considered slackers for not having volunteered." Challenging long-standing myths, this book examines the participation and performance of the conscripts in the Great War. 'Reluctant Warriors' provides fresh evidence that conscripts were good soldiers who made a crucial contribution to the war effort.

As space is limited at the museum, it is highly recommended that you pre-register early by calling 250-542-3142. Admission is $5.00 at the door. For more information call the museum, visit www.vernonmuseum.ca<http://www.vernonmuseum.ca> or find us on Facebook.

Patrick M. Dennis is a retired Canadian Air Force colonel and fighter controller who served abroad for over twenty-two years, including tours as Canada's deputy military representative to the NATO Military Committee in Brussels, Belgium, and as the Canadian defense attaché to Israel. He is a graduate of the United States Armed Forces Staff College, the NATO Defense College, and Canada's National Security Studies Course, and holds a master's degree in Leadership and Communication from the University of Northern Colorado. He has lectured on global political-military issues at Wilfred Laurier University, and written articles for numerous publications including the Canadian Military journal, and Canada's History.

His life-long interest in the First World War has led to his first book, "Reluctant Warriors: Canadian Conscripts and the Great War" (University of British Columbia Press in co-operation with the Canadian War Museum), which was published in September 2017.
