Join us for exclusive access to museum treasures
VICTORIA, BC-Have you ever dreamed of having a backstage pass to the Royal BC Museum? Now is your opportunity!
Meet museum experts at the Royal BC Museum's new adult workshop series, Unexplored Highlights of the Royal BC Museum<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/learn/adult-programming/unexplored-highlights-royal-bc-museum>. Dive deep into our world-class collections of art, photography, First Nations, marine and terrestrial life, and much more, with the kind of access usually reserved for researchers and scientists.
You'll get up close to museum treasures ranging from Emily Carr's powerful painting Tanoo, Q.C.I. [T'anuu, Haida Gwaii] to a taxidermy mount of a now-extinct Dawson's Caribou, one of only five specimens in the world. You'll learn the sorrowful story behind Chinese poems scrawled on an Immigration Office wall. And you'll hear about Mary Henry Gibson, the American "plants woman extraordinaire" who led a 50-strong packhorse-train to the Peace River region in the 1930s to collect plant specimens.
Explore big ideas through intimate conversations, dynamic presentations and exclusive visits to the collections.
The program, broken out into four themes, will be informal and deeply engaged.
* Part 1: The museum in five objects. We look at five exceptional objects that open a window into BC history.
* Part 2: The time factor. We question the meaning of objects and ask how that changes over time.
* Part 3: High and low: collecting throughout the province. We go to all corners, altitudes and depths to showcase the breadth of our collections.
* Part 4: Behind the scenes. Into the collections we go!
The four-part series of workshops run on Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm (February 3, 10, 17 and 24). Tickets are $150 per person for the whole series (10 per cent discount for members).
