Cultural Resource Management Spring Courses and Workshops:
Interpreting Cultural Heritage (AHVS 488H)
March 5-10, 2018
On-Campus at the University of Victoria
Instructor: Alastair Kerr
Whether in museums, at historic sites, within dense urban areas or at remote rural locations, interpreting the past is a two-way public communication process or dialogue about raising awareness and understanding of historical events, stories and memories from a variety of points of view to multiple different audiences.
This course will explore such concepts as the social construction of history and collective memory, from whose points of view such narratives are remembered and expressed, the notion of positivistic versus constructivist forms of interpretation, what is more appropriate at places of memorialization versus educational institutions, including museums, and how to manage a range of contested discourses from "hot" to "cool". Particularly problematic is the concept of dark heritage - remembering and interpreting events and sites of injustice, shame, conflict, death and atrocity - which is threaded throughout the course.
A wide variety of interpretive techniques are explored from letting an event or place speak for itself (genus loci), to signage and displays, to print, verbal, audio and visual communications, to interpretive centres, and to restorations, reconstructions and recreations of the past. A number of case studies will be presented and discussed. The course will be delivered through lectures, discussions, working in small groups and participant presentations.
