Let your inner child go wild at the Royal BC Museum this summer
VICTORIA, BC - Grown-ups get their fair share of fun this summer at the Royal BC Museum. From sleepaway camps to sipping our Egyptian themed beer, being an adult isn't all that bad!
Our popular Night at the Museum event isn't just for kids. Join us on September 1, 2018 for a grown-ups-only Egyptian themed adventure through the museum. Pack up your sleeping bag, find your favourite teddy and get ready for a night of food, entertainment and Ancient Egypt-themed activities.
Long summer evenings mean more time to enjoy our Food Truck Festival. Until August 31 the trucks will be open Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Try bites from different trucks including Deadbeetz and The Rolling Reef in our courtyard behind the museum. Enjoy a beer or wine each Sunday to Thursday 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm and Friday to Saturday 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Beat the heat and step inside the Royal BC Museum to marvel at more than 300 original artifacts in our feature exhibition Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/exhibitions/egypt>. Learn about the lives of six extraordinary pharaohs, what cosmetics at the time were made out of and which foods would have been on the menu for an ancient Egyptian.
Keeping on the Egyptian theme, be sure to pick up a bottle of the Swans Brewery "Pharaoh's Reserve" beer, crafted in partnership with the Royal BC Museum. Accented with grains of paradise, coriander and chamomile, this refreshing brew is fermented with lager yeast and brewed at a warmer temperature to simulate the pre-technology process. Available at Swans Liquor Store.
Starting in early August, Tsawout artists Tom and Perry LaFortune will be carving a totem pole on the museum's outdoor upper plaza, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Mondays, through Fridays. Access to the carving station is free, and the LaFortune brothers will be discussing their work and providing interpretation as they work.
You can track the progress of the carving on a webpage (http://rbcm.ca/pole) and on Royal BC Museum social media platforms (Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/RoyalBCMuseum/>, Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/royalbcmuseum/> and Twitter<https://twitter.com/RoyalBCMuseum>).
Don't Miss:
Hearing Provincial Carillonneur Rosemary Laing perform August 12, 19 and 26, 2018 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Netherlands Centennial Carillon. Stop by between 3:00 pm and 3:45 pm to hear a selection of familiar songs. The Native Plant Garden beneath the Carillon is a wonderful place to enjoy these free outdoors performances.
Visiting Helmcken House and St. Ann's School House. Open for the summer between 12 pm and 4 pm daily, these two properties will give you a rare and authentic glimpse into life in the 1800s. Helmcken House is one of the oldest houses in BC still on its original site. Learn about the owner, Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken, and his career with the Hudson's Bay Company. St. Ann's Schoolhouse is thought to be the oldest building still standing in Victoria, built in 1844 by Jacques Lequechier. Tour the schoolhouse and learn about its past as both a residence and schoolhouse.
Experiencing one of our learning team's live performances in Old Town. Join Charlotte and Sammie for their Salooning and Crooning performance about the golden age of saloons and prohibition. Performances take place on Tuesdays from 11:00 am to 11:30 am and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm. More performances to be announced shortly, stay tuned!
Late-night museum opening hours each Friday and Saturday throughout summer. Galleries will be open until 10:00 pm, giving plenty of time to explore after work.
