Popular art camps back again for Summer at Kelowna Art Gallery

June 22, 2018 - Kelowna, BC: There are still a few spaces available for the Kelowna Art Gallery's summer camps for children and youth. Art Adventures camps are organized for preschool children ages 3 to 5, for children ages 6 to 8, and for youth ages 9 to 12. Full-day camps, half-day camps, and partial-morning pre-school camps are scheduled Monday through Friday, beginning July 3 until August 24, 2018.

During the camps, children can expect to develop skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, and sculpture, while being inspired by the current exhibitions on view at the Gallery. Scheduled guest artists will also play a pivotal role at each of the camps, as they share their expertise with the children and help them develop a better understanding of art.

Leading the art camps and excursions to artists' studios, Kasugai Gardens, Waterfront Park, the beach, and nearby private galleries this year are two local artists and instructors.

Alisha Falvo is a recent graduate from the BFA program in Visual Studies at the University of Calgary and is an incoming teacher candidate at UBC Vancouver. "I am thrilled to be leading Art Adventures camps this summer. I look forward to working with the children to establish a curiosity about visual art and to help them explore their creativity and imagination."

Brock Gratz is currently enrolled in the BFA program in Visual Arts at UBC Okanagan and is one of the organizers behind the popular annual Kelowna Fan Experience (KFX) event. "I'm so excited to lead the summer camps this year! I can't wait to share my love of illustration, graphics, mechanical works, stagecraft, comics, and animation with campers through a number of fun and adventurous art activities."

Class sizes for all the Gallery's camps are limited, which allows for more one-on-one instruction and enriches the experience for all participants.

"Art Adventures is primarily about creating a fun and interactive experience for engaging children and youth with art," says Laura Wyllie, Public Programming Coordinator at the Kelowna Art Gallery. "We know many of the kids will be tired of classrooms by summer, so we make sure to take the kids out on fun and exciting off-site trips to inspire their imaginations."

The cost for a week of Preschool Camps (daily: 9 am-11 am) is $90.00, or $75.00 for members of the Kelowna Art Gallery; a week of Half-Day Camps (9 am-12 pm) is $115.00, or $100.00 for members; and a week of Day Camps (9 am-3 pm) is $160.00, or $145.00 for members.
