Artist’s residency in Haida Gwaii subject of conversation at Gallery

In Conversation: Joice M. Hall & Nika Collison
Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 3 pm

March 15, 2018 – Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery presents In Conversation: Joice M. Hall & Nika Collison, on Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 3 pm. This event is held in conjunction with Hall’s current exhibition, Gwaii Haanas – Islands and Sacred Sites.

Kelowna-based artist Joice M. Hall is joined by Nika Collison, Executive Director and Curator at the Haida Gwaii Museum, for a public tour of the exhibition, followed by an illuminating conversation.

In 2016, Hall was selected for a two week artist’s residency in Haida Gwaii that was presented by the Haida Gwaii Museum in collaboration with Gwaii Haanas/Parks Canada. This experience was the inspiration for her exhibition Gwaii Haanas – Islands and Sacred Sites, which features an 18-foot-long painting installation, comprised of a composite landscape that celebrates the ocean, forest, and marine life she saw while being guided around Gwaii Haanas. Hall referenced over 1,600 digital photographs that she took during her visit to create the high-realism paintings.

In Conversation: Joice M. Hall & Nika Collison is free to attend and open to the public.

Hall’s exhibition GWAII HAANAS – Islands and Sacred Sites is on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery until April 1, 2018.

Speakers’ Biographies

Joice M. Hall
A realist painter, Hall spent most of her career based in Calgary before moving to Kelowna in 1999. She studied at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary from 1960 to 1965. She has exhibited her work in galleries across Canada, and in Mexico. In 2010, the Kelowna Art Gallery organized a full-scale survey of Hall’s work, titled Surreal. Real. Ideal: The Art of Joice M. Hall.

Nika Collison
Jisgang, Nika Collison, belongs to the Kaayahl Laanas of the Haida Nation. Specializing in historic and contemporary Haida language, art and culture, she’s served as curator for the Haida Gwaii Museum since 2000 and has recently taken on the role of Executive Director. As a senior negotiator for Haida repatriation initiatives, she is privileged to work with her Nation to build reparations with museums, and, to work with her community in the creation of exhibitions, publications and programs both locally and on an international scale.
