Make a fool of yourself at the Royal BC Museum this April
VICTORIA, BC-The Royal BC Museum is getting into the April Fool's spirit with some light-hearted programs and cheeky changes to the exhibitions.
>From Friday, March 30 to Sunday, April 8 take part in the Royal BC Museum's April Fool's scavenger hunt. Pick up a handout, featuring important clues, at the Box Office and see if you can spot the subtle tricks our exhibits staff have played in the museum galleries. Use #museumfool to share your experience on social media.
Did you know that Killdeers sometimes pretend to have a broken wing to distract predators? And the Viceroy butterfly mimics the toxic Monarch to avoid being eaten? Find out more ways nature deceives us at Wonder Sunday: April Fool's<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105866/wonder-sunday-april-fools>, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 1. April's Live at Lunch<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/106033/live-lunch-sneak-peek-egypt-land-pharaohs> is a sneak peak of our Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs exhibition. The Head of Exhibitions and Head of Learning will explain how the Royal BC Museum is preparing for the North American debut of this special exhibition. Get insider knowledge on how an exhibition of this magnitude is put together. Attendance is by donation.
Museum Happy Hour<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/learn/adult-programming/adult-only-events/museum-happy-hour> is back! Grab your friends and pop in after work for drinks, snacks and themed activities in one of the museum galleries. The series starts on Thursday, April 12 with Fooling Around with History<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/106027/museum-happy-hour-fooling-around-history>, a game of true or false with our history collections in the Becoming BC gallery. Natural history more your thing? Come to Fooling Around with Nature<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/106028/museum-happy-hour-fooling-around-nature> on Thursday, April 26 and see how you score on the true or false game in our Natural History gallery. This event runs from 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10.
The Royal BC Museum is proud to bring you a screening of the Witness Blanket Documentary<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105862/witness-blanket-documentary>, in collaboration with MediaNet<http://medianetvictoria.org/> and the IndigeVision Film Festival. This film follows the creation of a blanket from materials related to residential schools. Carey Newman, the artist who made the Witness Blanket, will introduce the film and answer questions at the end. The free screening is on Saturday, April 15 at 7:00 pm. Seating is limited.
Celebrate International Astronomy Day<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105915/astronomy-day> on Saturday, April 21 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Royal BC Museum with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada-Victoria Centre. Look through a solar telescope, participate in hands-on activities and listen to presentations. Events will take place outdoors on the Upper Plaza (weather permitting) and in Clifford Carl Hall and the Newcombe Conference Hall. Included with museum admission or membership.
Celebrate the Netherlands Centennial Carillon's 50th anniversary<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105914/netherlands-centennial-carillon-50th-anniversary> on Saturday, April 28 with a live performance by Provincial Carillonneur Rosemary Laing. The recital will take place from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm and features newly commissioned music for this special occasion. The event is free and will take place at the Carillon in front of the Royal BC Museum.
Immerse yourself in spring at the Fieldtripper: Wildflower Walk<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105917/fieldtripper-wildflower-walk> up Mill Hill with Curator of Botany Dr. Ken Marr. Learn about the many rare plants Mill Hill is home to. This event is on Sunday, April 29 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and is suitable for ages 10 and up. Be prepared for steep terrain. Meet at Mill Hill Regional Park main parking lot on Atkins Avenue in Langford. This program is by donation (suggested amount is $5).
Learn everything you need to know to be able to conduct research at the BC Archives at the Introduction to the BC Archives<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/106022/introduction-bc-archives> workshop on Sunday, April 29 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Aimed at beginner researchers, participants will learn how to navigate the catalogue and genealogy database, access the variety of records managed, interpret finding aids, fill in call slips, use microfilm and handle original materials in a variety of formats. Participants will be given a resource kit to take home with them. Tickets are $20 per person.
