Selwyn Pullan: What's Lost
May 16―July, 14, 2018
Opening Reception: Tuesday, May 15, 7-9 p.m.
Photographer Selwyn Pullan captured the spirit of modernism on the West Coast
Over the past decade, the West Vancouver Museum has mounted two exhibitions and published a major book on the compelling photography of Selwyn Pullan (1922-2017), the preeminent photographer working in British Columbia in the middle of the 20th century.
While Pullan considered himself a commercial photographer, documenting both art and industry in British Columbia in the 1950s through 70s, it is his architectural photographs that stand out as vivid reminders of an intensely creative and innovative period in design. His images of the city also capture the spirit of the times: Vancouver's ubiquitous neon lights, a pre-condo cityscape and a period when ties, pearls, and cigarettes were all part of the dining out experience.
What's Lost is both a tribute to Selwyn Pullan and a reflection on a vanishing era. The exhibition includes portraits of architects and artists, as well as images of residential and commercial buildings and interiors that once formed part of the region's urban and cultural fabric, but have since succumbed to the ravages of time and pressures of redevelopment.
Curator's Exhibition Tour: Saturday, May 26, 2 p.m.
Selwyn Pullan: Behind the Lens
Join Kiriko Watanabe for her guided exhibition tour of Selwyn Pullan: What's Lost. Pullan taught Kiriko his firsthand knowledge about mid-century modern art and architecture, as well as digital production of his photographs. Kiriko will speak about her experience of working with Pullan and some behind the scene stories of restoring his old images.
Guest Talk: Saturday, June 9, 2 p.m.
Repositioning the New
Meet Adele Weder, an architectural writer and curator, and the current editor of Canadian Architect. Adele writes for books and design magazines across North America; she is the co-author of B.C. Binning and Selwyn Pullan: Photographing Mid-century West Coast Modernism, both by Douglas & McIntyre, and more recently the The Copp House, which is part of the new West Coast Modern House series, published by ORO Editions. Adele will discuss Pullan's role in bringing West Coast modern architecture to the wider public.
Guest Talk: Saturday, June 30, 2 p.m.
Seeing the Modern: Perspectives on Promotion and Conservation
Join Donald Luxton for an illustrated discussion on the importance of visual imagery in focussing our understanding of West Coast modernism, and the importance of Selwyn Pullan's photographs in promoting new modern styles, documenting architectural history and raising awareness of heritage conservation. Donald is an award-winning heritage consultant, the author of Building the West, co-author of Selwyn Pullan: Photographing West Coast Modernism, a founding director of the Heritage Vancouver Society and a current director of Heritage BC and the Arthur Erickson Foundation.
As a special offer during the course of this exhibition, 50 copies of Selwyn Pullan: Photographing Mid-Century West Coast Modernism published by Douglas & McIntyre (2012) signed by all the contributing writers (Barry Downs, Donald Luxton, Kiriko Watanabe and Adele Weder), as well as the photographer will be made available for purchase at the museum shop.
