Well known for being playful and engaging, Science World British Columbia makes science learning approachable and
captivating through interactive science and tech-based outreach programs, workshops and after-school programming.
For students, Tech Up will involve the development of new content to deliver coding and computational thinking
activities into well-established educational programs including Scientists and Innovators in the Schools, Super Science
Club, Library Kits and community Tech Up showcase events. For teachers, Tech Up will involve the development of new
digital skills, and provide barrier-free hands-on professional development experiences for educators.
Position Description:
Working alongside the Community Engagement team and with the Tech Up project team, the Tech Up Program Specialist
will play both lead and supporting roles in development, implementation, documentation and evaluation of Tech Up
programs designed to support teachers and students in underserved locations in BC: indigenous communities, inner-city
schools and those living in rural or remote communities.
The Tech Up facilitator will support the Scientists and Innovators in the Schools staff and volunteers and the Super
Science Club staff to implement coding and computational thinking activities in these well-established programs.
They will prototype, pilot, and deliver workshops at TELUS World of Science as part of our robust field trip program.
The Tech Up Program Specialist will work with the Tech Up project team to support the delivery of teacher professional
enrichment workshops across BC, including two 5-day summer professional learning camps for teachers.
Contract length: June 2018-June 2019
Who are we looking for?
You are a team player who is comfortable working with colleagues using influence rather than authority. You are
organized and independent, yet flexible and collaborative, have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and
experience dabbling in multiple projects simultaneously. You are a life-long learner who enjoys tinkering with innovative
technology; you can quickly familiarize yourself with new tech and are keen to share your discoveries with others of all
ages.
What skills and capabilities do you bring?
Background/experience in science, engineering or creative technology (post-secondary education in a related field preferred)
Proven ability to work with learners of various ages and ability levels, particularly youth
Familiarity with innovative science teaching methods, such as inquiry, design thinking, and problem-based learning
Experience with coding, digital literacy and computational thinking
Excellent organizational, time-management and team work skills
Experience in developing and implementing successful education programs and resources
Must have a valid unrestricted driver's licence with clean driving record (candidate will be asked to provide current driver's abstract for examination and approval), and must be willing to travel throughout BC by driving and by air
Flexible work schedule is required with periodic weekend, evening work, overnight and multi-day travel required
What's the typical background we are looking for?
* Informal teaching experience (e.g. camp, after-school club)
* Experience with one or more, or similar:
o LEGO Mindstorms
o Ozobots
o Micro:bit
o Dash and Dot
o Arduino
o Spheros
o Raspberry Pi
o Makey Makey
* Familiar with one or more of the following languages:
o Python
o Scratch
o Processing
o HTML
o Javascript
