This year, the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture has teamed up with the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance to produce its annual conference, this year titled Unrestricted. It’s all about forging collaborations without restrictions. 

Unrestricted is also about pushing boundaries and fostering new practices around inclusion and equity, funding policy, reconciliation, audience engagement and creativity. Some of the discussions are bound to agitate those comfortable with tradition, but it’s time to innovate—and think in unrestricted ways. 

Unrestricted features 40 of the brightest minds in the arts and culture sector, including Margo Kane, Marcus Youssef, Prem Gill, JB the First Lady, and Hanna Cho. Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture will be there to welcome delegates. 

Monica Gattinger, who is the director of the Institute for Science, Society and Policy at the University of Ottawa, leads the session called The Future of Arts Funding, which will see representatives from BC arts organizations, both established and emerging, and with significantly diverging concepts of funding priorities, explore together what government funding should look like in a new cultural era.

Should "artistic excellence" be a key criteria for eligibility when people of different cultures value engagement over virtuosity? What are promising new models of arts funding? How are large organizations being affected by changes at the CCA?  

In short, Gattinger’s session at Unrestricted will explore the past, present and future of arts funding and, consequently, the evolution of arts organizations. The discussion promises to be challenging and enlightening.
