Last winter we relocated our hanging textile storage and made about 3 dozen garment bags and padded hangers as part of a Collections Management MAP project.
We made two different styles (and several different lengths) based on the patterns in the CCI Notes 13/5 (Canadian Conservation Institute). We bought a wide bolt of unbleached cotton online through amazon. (When applying I had negotiated a discount price from our local Fabricland, but it went out of business before we were approved to implement. I was a little concerned about getting the correct weight through an online order but it proved satisfactory. You probably have more options for fabric shopping than we do in the hinterland!)
The garment bags are relatively speedy/easy to make and I have done it at other sites with a volunteer sewing team. We also used the unbleached cotton to make the padded hangers which are described in the same note, but they are a little more time consuming.
We wanted the bags for dust protection, but also to reduce the exposure to light since we were moving the textiles to a rolling shelf unit in an area where the ceiling lights are on quite frequently. We pin photos of the contents of each bag in a photo sleeve to the outside of each bag .
