Accomplished North Okanagan author, curator, historian, and masterful storyteller Ken Mather will speak about his latest book, Trail North: The Okanagan Trail of 1858 - 68 and its origins in British Columbia and Washington, Saturday December 1st, 1:30pm - 2:30pm, at the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives.
The new book tells the story of the historic trail through the Okanagan Valley and its use by the Indigenous people and three different fur trading companies, before focusing on its use during the BC gold rush years of 1858 to 1868. As usual, Mather's extensive research and abilities as a storyteller make the book a compelling read for those interested in BC's colourful history.
Mather explains, "I first decided to write this book when travelling through the Grand Coulee in Washington, where a large sign tells the traveller about the Cariboo Trail, as it is referred to south of the border. It seemed to me that readers in Washington as well as BC would be interested in the little-known story of the trail." He further explains, "Trails are the most enduring memorials of human occupation. Long before stone monuments were created, pathways throughout the world were being worn into hardness by human feet. Travellers along the stretch of Highway 97 from Brewster, Washington, to Kamloops, BC, may not know that they are travelling a route as old as humankind's presence in the region. In fact, this north-south valley, a natural corridor linking the two major river systems that drain the Interior Plateau, has served as transportation routes for tens of thousands of years."
The presentation and book signing is the latest in the Vernon Museum's Speaker Series, with Mather's PowerPoint presentation focusing on the use of the trail through the Okanagan in gold rush times, 1858 -1868.
Ken Mather has been involved for four decades in researching and interpreting the cowboy heritage of Western Canada. He has held curatorial positions at Fort Edmonton Park, Barkerville, and the O'Keefe Ranch, and is the author of four previous books on ranching history. He lives in Armstrong, BC.
As space is limited, please call the museum at 250-550-3140 to pre-register. Presentation admission is $5.00/person, at the door. Mather will follow his one-hour presentation with a question and answer session and book signing.
