Dear BC Library, Museums and Archives colleagues:
Funding Available for Rural Community Based Projects up to $5,000
For the sixth consecutive year, the UBC Library's Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and the UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning and are pleased to announce the launch of the BC Rural Community Engaged Learning Fund<https://ikblc.ubc.ca/initiatives/remote-community-based-learning-fund/> for the 2018-2019 academic year.
This funding is available to UBC faculty members or instructors to work with rural partners to create community-based experiential learning (CBEL) opportunities for their students - and to ensure meaningful outcomes for and accountability to communities. The Fund is intended to support collaborations between UBC students and organizations located in rural and northern communities in British Columbia.
Importantly, this is not just what the community can learn from UBC but what UBC can learn from the community.
Who can apply? UBC faculty or instructors.
However, as a prospective community partner, you can propose a project idea.
To initiate a general enquiry, start here:
https://ccel.ubc.ca/connect*
If you already have a project in mind, use this survey<https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cUd56D4WNCpDmqF>* to submit more details.
*On the form, indicate "rural/northern community" so that the submission is routed to the appropriate UBC staff member.
By connecting with UBC through funded projects, community partners collaborate with faculty work and student learning that cannot be achieved through traditional university teaching and scholarship. Through this experience, rural community organizations have the opportunity to connect their priorities to faculty work and student learning. Students have the opportunity to learn about community priorities outside of urban centres while also testing their own assumptions and developing teamwork and communication skills.
UBC faculty members or instructors can learn more about eligibility and apply by visiting this site<https://facultystaff.students.ubc.ca/student-development-services/remote-community-based-learning-funding>.
If you have any questions, please email Gordon Yusko<mailto:gordon.yusko at ubc.ca> with Irving K. Barber Learning Centre or Jill Porter <mailto:jill.porter at ubc.ca> with the Centre for Community Engaged Learning.
