Hi Terry,
The JMABC underwent a visual identity consultation process in early 2015 that has had a significant positive impact on the organization. I would recommend that you do a similar process rather than simply creating a new logo.
We hired a local graphic designer with experience in this kind of work. He carried out a series of interviews with JMABC board, staff, volunteers, and program participants to get their views on the identity of the organization, and how they each saw its future looking. We answered questions like, “What is the voice of the organization: Formal vs Irreverent, Personal vs Institutional?” These questions helped to define how we wanted to present ourselves publicly.
The result was a Visual Identity Guide, which I’ve attached here. It provides guidelines on how we present ourselves visually, including prescribed fonts, colours, shapes, and use of images. I refer to this document on a regular basis when designing new materials from our letterhead to flyers, newsletters, exhibits or website. By having these guidelines, we’re able to make each item distinct but still feel like part of a suite – a family so to speak. This has been a huge improvement over the scattershot approach we were using previously. It also ensures that whoever is designing your materials in the future, whether on staff or an outside contractor, will adhere to the same guiding principles so that the design isn’t governed by changing personal tastes.
I believe that this brand development is part of standard graphic design education, so you should have no trouble finding someone capable to take it on, although you might have to reach out to someone in Kelowna or another nearby larger urban centre.
I’d be happy to chat with you more about our experience going through this process. Feel free to give me a call if you like.
Best,
Michael

Subject: [BCMA] Rebranding
Hello friends
The Princeton and District Museum and Archives Society is looking into rebranding ourselves with a splashy new logo. It will help us to learn from the experience that other Museums have had with this. We are also looking for a Logo designer. Can any of you provide me with someone who's work was a success for you.
With gratitude,
Terry Malanchuk
