Celebrate Canada’s West Coast Multicultural Fishing History May 4th, 2019
RICHMOND, BC – Join us for The Pull of the Net: A Multicultural Celebration<http://gulfofgeorgiacannery.org/events/the-pull-of-the-net-a-multicultural-celebration>, a family-friendly, FREE event on Saturday May 4th, from 11am to 4pm at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site in Steveston. This third annual event will feature performances, displays, activities, and food of the diverse communities which helped to shape Canada’s west coast fishing industry.
Highlights include cultural performances including a Chinese Lion Dance, Japanese taiko drummers, Salish song and dance, Greek and Canadian maritime music, Scottish highland dancing and much more.
Workshops, demonstrations, crafts, and food tastings will be presented by community groups and artists including Alana Hansen, Christine Mackenzie, Richmond Chinese Artists Club, Earthhand Gleaners Society, Pangaea Arts, Pathways Aborginal Youth Centre, Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond Public Library, Scandinavian Community Centre, Steveston Historical Society, Vancouver Cantonese Opera, Wheelhouse Seafoods, and YK3 Sake.
Throughout the day, multi-lingual guided tours (English, French, Mandarin, Japanese) of the historic salmon cannery will be offered in addition to special showings of “Ebb & Flow: Turning Points in West Coast Fishing History” a 25-minute documentary film in the Boiler House Theatre with French, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese subtitles. Visitors can also explore the Cannery’s new feature exhibit The Label Unwrapped: the history of canned salmon labels (open May 2019 to Spring 2021), and The Cannery Cat’s Collection, a temporary exhibit celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site of Canada is operated by the non-profit Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, on behalf of Parks Canada.
