Community Curating and Connections at Museum of Surrey

In 2017 the Museum of Surrey launched a new vision, "To be the best people's museum in Canada". This vision along with a new name, mission, and strategic plan, and a 14,000 square foot expansion opened in 2018, have ushered in big changes in how the museum engages community.

Engagement with community at Museum of Surrey has happened across museum departments. For example, community groups involved in special events build long term relationships and have become leaders for exhibitions. Likewise, some groups who have created exhibits later become involved leading events at the museum.

Colleen Sharpe, Curator of Exhibits will share examples and insights into how exhibits are being led by community and give examples of outreach exhibits and community collaborations. Wendy Cheung, Community Events Specialist, will share further examples from public events that are inclusive and diverse, and talk about relationship building.

Lower Mainland Curatorial Group
Calling all Curators, Exhibit Designers, Conservators and Researchers! Our meet-ups are bi-monthly and hosted by various organizations around the Lower Mainland. Each meet-up will look at an exhibit "case study" and offer participants a chance to discuss newly launched exhibits at neighbouring institutions. We all work hard for our exhibits - let's share those lessons learned!
