*MAP’s Access to Heritage component*
· Did you know that if your museum has at least one full-time
professional museum staff person, provides services year-round and has
policies for key museum functions, you can apply for funding to create,
display, circulate and host a travelling exhibit?
· MAP’s Access to Heritage component supports access to cultural
and natural heritage through travelling exhibits. Eligible costs, for both
the originating and host museum, include creation of the exhibit,
installation and de-installation, marketing, community engagement
activities, insurance and shipping.
· Museums creating a travelling exhibit, and the host venue(s), are
eligible for 70% of costs to a max of $600,000 over three years. Or
museums hosting a travelling exhibit can be eligible up to 70% of costs to
a max of $15,000.
*MAP’s Indigenous Heritage component*
· Did you know that the Indigenous Heritage component has the
broadest range of activities eligible in the Museums Assistance Program
(MAP)?
· Indigenous organizations with a mandate to preserve and support
Indigenous heritage are eligible to apply for projects to preserve, present
and manage Indigenous cultural heritage. Indigenous governments are also
eligible to apply, but must be able to demonstrate that they provide
support to professional heritage activities in their community.
· Some examples of projects supported under this component include:
researching and creating a permanent, temporary, or travelling exhibit;
creating a teaching collection and corresponding learning activities that
can be used in the museum, schools or at community events; and, purchasing
display cases to display artefacts throughout the community.
· Funding priority in this component is given to Indigenous
applicants; however, non-Indigenous museums may be considered if they have
a signed MOU with an eligible Indigenous organization who is an active
partner in the project i.e. contributing staff time, co-developing
activities and expected outcomes, and directly benefiting from the results.
· Most supported projects are for one year and under $50,000, but
applicants can apply for up to 70% of eligible expenses to a max of
$200,000 over two years.
*MAP’s Collections Management component*
· Did you know that three types of projects are eligible under
MAP’s Collections Management component?
· If your museum has at least one full-time professional museum
staff person, provides services year-round and has policies for key museum
functions, you can apply for collections storage improvements, purchase of
a new or significant upgrade of a collections management database, or
sharing best practices related to key museum function.
· The most common two types of projects are collections storage
improvements (i.e. new shelving and reorganization of artefacts) and
purchase and implementation of a new collections management database.
· Applicants can apply for up to 50% of eligible expenses to a max
of $50,000 over one year.
The Museums Assistance Program (MAP) is a funding program with the federal
Department of Canadian Heritage that provides financial assistance to
eligible Canadian museums and related institutions undertaking projects in
three main components:
· Access to Heritage – creation and circulation of travelling
exhibitions (must be travelling to at least one other confirmed venue)
· Indigenous Heritage – preservation, management and presentation
of Indigenous cultural heritage
· Collections Management – collections storage improvements,
purchase of a new or significant upgrade of a collections management
database, or sharing best practices related to key museum functions
The minimum general eligibility for an organization:
· must provide services to the public year-round
· has the equivalent of one full-time paid professional museum staff
· has policies for key museum functions and an active strategic plan
For the Indigenous Heritage component, Indigenous governments and other
Indigenous organizations with a mandate to preserve and support Indigenous
heritage are eligible to apply.
Applications are now being accepted for projects that start within the
April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2021 federal fiscal year. For further

confirm eligibility of both the applicant and the project, and to discuss
how to best strengthen the application to fit program objectives.
Applications can be emailed or mailed:
· By email, applications must be sent by 11:59 local time on
November 1, 2019.
· If mailed, applications must be postmarked on or before November
