MEDIA RELEASE - For immediate release

A Roadside Attraction! Opening Reception of the CRAG’s newest Exhibition Rest
Area.

September 6, 2019, Campbell River, BC: Art is part of the whole family in
the Campbell River Art Gallery’s (CRAG's) newest exhibition by the father
and sons team Cedric, Nathan and Jim Bomford in Rest Area & Crummy Gallery.
The two brothers, Cedric and Nathan work with their father, Jim Bomford, to
create two custom-built installations on display in both Spirit Square and
inside the CRAG.

The Bomfords’ installation and photographic work is created through a
hands-on practice of ‘thinking through building’ which, in this case, uses
rest areas, those beloved pit-stops along the highway where we stretch our
legs or walk the dog. Both installations are created to provoke thought on
two aspects of these curious in-between spaces. One, the troubling nature
of “public” space and the power structures that feed into decisions about
how we use them and who can access them. Second, the way the minutiae of
these unnoticed spaces mirrors aspects of our lives. Rest areas are a
metaphor for the spaces that connect where we’ve been with where we are
going.

A very special Opening Reception is planned for Saturday, September 21 from
3:00 to 5:00pm in the Main Gallery and Spirit Square and will include the
father and son trio who are always willing to talk about their socially
aware and weather resistant artwork. This is one of the key-stone events
featured in the Art & Earth Festival for the weekend. The afternoon will
include live music on Spirit Square Stage, food trucks, and an interactive
community marble track you can race-on and add-to with recycled materials.
We will also launch Coffee & Crummy, a weekly opportunity to tour the
Crummy Gallery and engage in discussions with free coffee and doughnuts to
anyone in the square. The Crummy Gallery will be parked on the Gallery lawn
until November 18. Call or email the Gallery for details on free use of the
space for a meeting or gathering, and Crummy visiting hours.

Join us on Sunday, September 22 from 2:30 to 4:30pm for a conversation with
the Bomfords, as they talk through the processes of building interactive
works you can play on, touch, and climb. The Bomfords will explore the
politics of public spaces and question how occupants are restricted by
rules defined by economic, territorial, and social interests. They are a
warm and welcoming bunch with lots of great insights. You won’t want to
miss meeting the family.
