I am always torn by this. Do you have a sense of what your average donation is? Does your physical layout make it easy to charge?
We are also a visitor centre, thus a large part of our main building has to be free, plus we have a lot of exhibits outdoors and our grounds have multiple access points that we can not really control, so for us it makes sense to do it by donation. I also know that our average door donation does not come close to what a modest admission fee would bring in. So if we had a more controlled area, I would consider it. The big issue for me would be accessibility, discouraging people with financial difficulties, locals, etc. So again I would look at whom your visitors are. Could there be just a charge in the summer when the visitors are mostly from out of town? Another option is entrance by a suggested donation amount.
Cheers

Subject: [BCMA] To charge or not to charge
Atchelitz Threshermen’s Association Pioneer Museum in Chilliwack is re-opening for one day a week. For many years we have had a sign saying admission by donation. We are considering charging a minimal fee for entrance to our main building. Our numbers have been going up over the last few years and our donations have increased considerably, but we wonder if we are shortchanging ourselves by not charging.
Any ideas or opinions on this issue would be much appreciated.
