SMOC (BC Society for the Museum of Original Costume) is a small, but
established, non-for-profit organization. The organization’s mandate is to
create a museum of historic fashion and the fabric arts.
The SMOC is seeking new Board members for two-year terms of office beginning
5 April 2020.
Candidates interested in joining SMOC are asked to respond to info at SMOC.ca,
with ‘Nominations’ in the subject line. Note that SMOC membership must be
paid for 30 days in advance of the election to be eligible.
The achievement of SMOC’s goals will require financial resources beyond
those available at present. We are in need of a chair of the *fundraising
committee* tasked with identifying potential sources of funding from
private sponsors to government grants. The individual heading this
committee would be responsible for the preparation of grant applications.
This may entail working with consultants. A potential chair of such a
committee will achieve important life skills.
SMOC hopes to put a new emphasis on the use of rotating exhibitions. We
require an *Exhibitions chair* to identify suitable sites, oversee the
construction and installation of display cases and prepare the exhibition
story-line. Again, such an individual will gain useful and marketable
skills.
Finally, and most importantly, SMOC needs a new home to accommodate our
expanding collection and serve as a base for travelling exhibitions. We
need a *committee chairperson to direct a special committee to look for
such a new facility. *
It would be helpful, but not essential, if candidates for such Board
positions might have a background in business, management, marketing, law
or commercial real estate.
