Join the BCMA on Wednesday, March 18 from 1-2 pm (PST) for a roundtable
webinar exploring how cultural institutions are embracing the maker
movement. If you’ve ever wondered what a makerspace is, or how your
organization could incorporate ideas from the maker movement, this
roundtable webinar is for you.
According to Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maker_culture>, maker
culture is “a contemporary culture or subculture representing a
technology-based extension of DIY culture that intersects with hacker
culture (which is less concerned with physical objects as it focuses on
software) and revels in the creation of new devices as well as tinkering
with existing ones.” From art galleries
<https://www.tworiversgallery.ca/programs/makerlab/>, to libraries
<https://www.epl.ca/makerspace/>, to museums
<https://themuseum.ca/the-underground-studio-makerspace/>, to converted
school buses <https://www.makerbus.ca/>, cultural organizations are
embracing maker culture to create innovative community spaces that
encourage learning by doing.
We are excited to bring together a cross-country panel of makers who
represent a variety of different cultural organizations for this roundtable
discussion. Panelists include:
- Dr. Katherine Cook <https://twitter.com/katherinercook?lang=en>,
Assistant Professor, Université de Montréal
- Alan Thomson
<https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/librarys-new-labs-opens-audio-visual-production-tools-to-public>,
Digital Literacy Facilitator, London Public Libraries
- Briana Sadler
<https://bcmaconference2019.sched.com/speaker/briana_sadler.1zrvgz6j>,
MakerLab Coordinator, Two Rivers Art Gallery
- Lisa Connor <https://twitter.com/lisamconnor?lang=en>, Assistant
Director, The Exploration Place
- Ryan Hunt, Executive Director of the BCMA and founder of Canada’s
first mobile makerspace, the MakerBus <https://www.makerbus.ca/>
In addition to these panelists, we are still waiting on confirmation from
several other maker experts. Join us on March 18 and meet the full panel!
This will be a roundtable-style discussion offering webinar participants
the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, and explore maker resources.
If you have a burning question from anything ranging from using 3D
printers, to what kinds of technology to purchase for your makerspace, to
how to build a community around your makerspace, this is your opportunity
to connect with cultural professionals with diverse makerspace experience.
