Hello Theresa,
We are excited to announce that we are accepting applications from First
Nations and community organizations to deliver *Reclaiming My Language: A
Course for Silent Speakers
<http://www.fpcc.ca/language/Programs/Silent-Speaker.aspx>*.
FPCC provides communities with assistance and course materials in addition
to funding of up to $25,000 per course.
Deadline for applications is June 1, 2020.
Reclaiming my Language: A Course for Silent Speakers is for people who
understand but do not speak their language. It is based on a successful
program that was originally developed by and for Indigenous Sami peoples,
and customized for Indigenous communities in B.C.
The course uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and supports silent
speakers with tools and coaching - you can reclaim your language!
* Course Information *
The course takes place over 10 weeks for 2-3 hours each week. It includes:
- 10 silent speaker participants, each paired with a fluent mentor
- Supportive environment to practice speaking the language
- Individual skill development in CBT
- Weekly homework assignments
- Optional internship opportunities to contribute to a community
language program
- Funding to cover the costs of, and support in, planning and delivering
the course
The course must be completed between Sept 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
*Eligibility*
- There are 25 courses available with a priority placed on communities
who have not previously offered this course.
- First Nations Communities, Governments, Bands, Tribal Councils or
Indigenous organizations and education/cultural centres in B.C. are
eligible to apply.
- If you are a silent speaker interested in taking this course, please
encourage your First Nation or community organization to apply.
