The Vancouver Police Museum & Archives is looking to hire a Collections
Assistant Intern to assist with a collections management project.
*Who we are:*
The Vancouver Police Museum & Archives (VPMA), North America’s oldest
police museum, delivers a unique perspective on the history of law and law
enforcement within the context of the City's growth and development. The
VPMA is located in the heart of historic Vancouver and is housed in the
heritage building that was once home to the Coroner’s Court, Morgue, and
City Analyst’s Laboratory. The VPMA is a stand-alone, non-profit
institution that relies solely upon admissions, membership, donations, and
grants to support its operations.
*The project:*
The VPMA houses over 20,000 artifacts related to policing, the Coroner’s
Services and forensic investigation. As part of its collection management
mandate, the museum has been actively digitizing its artefacts and
providing online access through an open public platform. Working under the
supervision of the Museum Curator, the successful Collections Assistant
candidate will assist in a collection management project involving the
museum's Historic Technology collection from the VPD, Forensic Labs and
Coroner’s Services.
*Position description:*
The Collections Assistant will be provided with a broad range of
collections management learning opportunities. They will be responsible for
full documentation of artefacts relating to the collection project
including but not limited to artefact accessioning, description of records,
condition reporting, essential preservation, and digitization. They will
see the collection project from start to finish developing a defined skill
set. The project will involve managing new storage areas and proper storage
of collection artefacts. A high level of dedication to detail and research
will be required for this position.
*Requirements:*
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about artefacts, museums, and/or
local history, and interested in a career in museums, heritage, and/or
collections management
· Excellent research, communication, and interpersonal skills
· Computer literacy, including Microsoft applications
· Detail-oriented
· Ability to work as part of a team and independently
· Able to lift 20 kilos
*Eligibility:*
To be eligible for an internship, candidates must be:
· A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status
in Canada;
· Legally entitled to work in Canada;
· Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
· Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
· Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while
employed with the program;
· Unemployed or underemployed;
· A college or university graduate;
· Not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed
with the program; and
· Not previously participated in or paid under this or any other
Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's
Youth Employment Strategy.
The VPMA welcomes participation from the Government of Canada’s job equity
