Hello from the Comox Archives & Museum Society:

We had an email which was obviously sent by the same scammer. He gave a
phone number and we left a message on his phone

telling him that we don't charge admission and we have no credit debit
machine at our museum.

You are correct in assuming he is targeting all museums, and the scam has
reached Vancouver Island as well.

Thanks for emailing all the members because it has probably spread
throughout BC and maybe the rest of the country.

Regards,

Marcia Turner

Subject: [BCMA] Refund scam alert

A heads-up for museum and heritage sites in Metro Vancouver:

Someone recently tried to scam our museum into refunding their admission
fees. Originally beginning with a false claim of "bad service" (saying we
sold a ticket to their family 15 minutes prior to closing so they wanted
their money back - which we had proof that it did not happen), this
escalated into an accusation of "siphoning from their bank account" and a
false threat of an RCMP report being filed. A copy of their "bank statement"
led us to believe that he has tried the same scam with other museums and
galleries.

If this sounds familiar, please contact me and I can provide information on
how to deal with this individual.
