[BCMA] SCOUT MUSEUM IN VICTORIA BC

Hi everyone.

My name is Ron Bilinsky and I have been a member of Scouts Canada for the past 28 years
having been a Beaver, Cub and Scout leader as well as a Group Commissioner for 2nd Tsartlip 
in Brentwood Bay, a Deputy Area Commissioner for the Saanich Peninsula, a Deputy Commissioner 
for Honours and Awards, a member of the Camp Barnard Camp Committee that oversees the 
Scout camp in Sooke BC, (i.e. where I have created a Ham Radio Shack), and a member of the 
30th BP Guild that oversees Scout House where our Scout museum is located. I have also 
attended several Provincial Scout Jamborees, the last two were held in 2015 & 2019 where I ran a 
Ham Radio Station which was held in my home town of Sooke, BC, and I have run a yearly “Emergency 
Tarp Station" at the annual Klondike Derby held at Royal Roads.

My other volunteer activities include:
- member of the Sooke Fire Department’s "Emergency Support Services” program
- co-ordinator of the Sooke “Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program”
- chair of the Sooke RCMP’s "Citizens on Patrol and Speed Watch" programs
- running the “Great Sookeini Race” at the annual Sooke Fall Fair
- Security Team leader for the annual Sooke Fine Arts Show
- member of the Westcaost Amateur Radio Association & Radio Amateurs Canada, (i.e. Ham Radio)
- member of the Sooke Contract and the Duplicate Bridge Clubs, and
- a grandparent to a 3 and 7 year old

For the last 5 plus years, I have overseen the Scout Museum located at 505 Marigold Road 
in Victoria BC. This collection of Scouting memorabilia has been growing for many years, but 
basically was kept in boxes and cupboards. What I have done is create more of a display type 
presentation that includes: a) more than a thousand badges on cork boards, b) more than a 
dozen uniforms mounted on manikins, c) 8 glass cabinets for scout trophies, cups and saucers, 
scout knives and whistles, d) plus a hundred or so Scouting books and neckers etc. etc. etc. 


 


Presently however, we have dismantled our entire display, (which was mainly housed in a small 
10’ by 15’ room), as we are expanding to a room 3 X the size, which will allow for a better display,
and we have also started working with a museum mentor to help with our planning and displays. With 
the Covid-19 virus however, the move to the larger space is presently on hold until later in 2021.

My request to all the other museums however, is that if you have Scouting memorabilia that you 
no longer need or want, and wish to part with we would be most appreciative, (i.e. mostly small items 
like badges, etc. which are less expensive to ship), as we are generally good with most other items etc. 
In turn, we have many duplicate and triplicate badges that we can donate or trade with you.

PS: If you are a museum "focussed on Scouting", (or Guiding), I would love to hear from you and would 
like to have ongoing contact as to how you: 
a) you present your memorabilia, (i.e. photos are always welcome)
b) where are you applying for grants etc., and 
c) how you manage your museum budget and volunteer staffing etc.
