Hello,

I'm looking for a little advice from other museums with boards that have
adopted Policy Governance. My question comes out of a conversation with my
board about our collections policy, specifically around deaccessioning.

The Canadian Museum Association's guidelines for deaccessioning state that
the final decision with regards to deaccessioning items should be with the
governing body. However, my board sees this as an operational means for
which, through Policy Governance, the responsibility is delegated to me,
the ED.

My board is willing to approve and review operational policies but when
asked to take on further actionable responsibilities outlined in the policy
they feel it goes against the principles of Policy Governance.

I'd love to hear how other museums deal with this or similar issues related
to operational policies upholding best practices/ethical guidelines that
don't align with the Policy Governance structure.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly at director at cumberlandmuseum.ca
