I think that we SHOULD NOT re-apply the tradition First Nations cultural
method. With the introduction of European grasses, the application of fire
will boost the introduced grasses that now form the herb layer of our Garry
oak ecosystems.
Good luck! J

Subject: Use of Fire in Municipal Parks
Dear Friends of Uplands Park
Fire is the natural and First Nations cultural method of eliminating
unwanted plants in the endangered Garry Oak Ecosystem.
As a part of an environmental studies class, a group of UVic students are
organizing an event on campus THURSDAY DECEMBER 1st about Fire
Reintroduction in Garry Oak Ecosystems! The event will take place in David
Strong room C114 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and feature three guest speakers:
John Dick (from Friends of Uplands Park), Thomas Munson (from the City of
Victoria) and Becky Miller (a UVic PhD student). Following these short talks
will be a quick talk on effective letter-writing followed by a letter
writing workshop. If you wish, you will have the opportunity to write your
own letter to the municipality on the issue of fire reintroduction in
municipal parks! All materials will be provided.
If you are interested in the restoration of Garry Oak Ecosystems through
fire and would like to take direct action, please come to the event! Anyone
is welcome to attend and bring friends!
