Doug Biden's Visceral Allegories at the Burnaby Art Gallery=20
=20
(BURNABY, BC) -The Burnaby Art Gallery is very pleased to present a
consolidated and expressive group of artworks by the late Doug Biden
under the title Visceral Allegories. The exhibition runs from September
11- October 21 and consists of 75 mixed media and print works created by
Biden between 1990 and 2006.=20
=20
Works chosen for the show reflect a period in the artist's life which
was one of his most creative; it was a period of great discovery,
resolution and synthesis. Biden strove to provide a forum, through his
art, for artists and other viewers to engage in a dialogue about each
work's references and meanings. Rising above mere documentation, the
prints and multi-media paper works examine the human condition and bear
witness to the complex times that humanity is enduring. This collection
of Modernist-based works embodies the ideas that drove Biden to create
art; ideas that centre on the influence of the media and people's
reactions to it, as well as on political activism, social commentary and
the human body.=20
=20
Doug Biden was a graduate of the Vancouver School of Art and Concordia
University. He held teaching positions at the Emily Carr Institute of
Art and Design, Capilano College - Sechelt Campus and UBCO in Kelowna.
As an artist, he participated in residencies around the world and
exhibited extensively throughout Canada in solo, two-person and group
exhibitions. As a master printmaker Biden contributed to many
historically important projects including several works created at Prior
Editions Studio during the 1990's.=20

"The Doug Biden: Visceral Allegories exhibition and companion
publication is an attempt by the Burnaby Art Gallery to acknowledge and
showcase some of the best work created by Doug Biden during the last
decade and a half of his life. This was a time when he fully pushed the
printmaking medium, worked with different media and sought to engage
different audiences through his politically and socially charged
artwork," notes curator Darrin Martens. "It was an honour to work with
Doug in selecting the artworks to present as well as speak with him at
length about his creative process, social and political stances and
outlook on humanity - all of which comes through in his art."
