On behalf of Wesley Wenhardt, executive director and the staff of the
Vancouver Maritime Museum, we are pleased to invite you to attend the
"George Day" ceremony on Friday, June 22 at 11.30 am to 12.30 pm. The event
which will recognize the 250th anniversary of the birth of our city's
namesake, Captain George Vancouver, is sponsored by the City of Vancouver,
the Vancouver Maritime Museum, Canada Post, the Vancouver Port Authority,
and the Vancouver Historical Society.
Official celebration kicks off at 11.30 am at the Maritime Museum
(waterside) with Mayor Sam Sullivan proclaiming "George Day" followed by a
myriad of activities hosted by the City of Vancouver, Canada Post, Port of
Vancouver, Vancouver Maritime Museum and the Vancouver Historical Society. A
special George Vancouver stamp will be unveiled by the Mayor and Canada Post
and first day covers and stamps will be sold. There's a gun salute by the
15th Field Regiment, and at 12.10 pm, vessels in Vancouver's waters will
sound their horns for about 10 seconds. A tugboat ballet follows off the
waters of Kitsilano Point that can be seen from Vanier and Hadden Parks,
Sunset Beach and English Bay Beach. There will be birthday cake, musicians
and "George Vancouver." Admission for children 18 years and under will be
free on June 22.
The J Torben Karlshoej Gallery features the Museum's collection of material
relating to Captain Vancouver and his three year voyage and exploration
along the coast of British Columbia. An experienced, sailor, explorer,
navigator and cartographer, Vancouver mapped the BC coastline in 1792. In
several voyages between 1791 and 1795, Vancouver charted for the first time
the rugged coastline of what is today Oregon, Washington and British
Columbia. So thorough were his charts, that mariners used them for well over
a hundred years. A leather-bound, gilt-edge volume from the Museum's first
edition collection of Vancouver's journals will be one of the items on
display. Also on display will be a selection of Captain Vancouver prints by
marine artist, John M Horton, CSMA, FCA which are a visual account of
Captain Vancouver's amazing exploration along our coast.
We hope you will be able to join us. Parking is available in both the
Museum's lot as well as the Space Centre/Vancouver Museum parking lot.
Please call 604 257-8300 if you have any questions.
