Job Posting: Consulting Curator of Northwest Coast Art
The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, opening May 2008 at 639
Hornby Street in Vancouver, will be the home for exhibitions of
contemporary Aboriginal art, created here on the Northwest Coast.
Continuum: Vision and Creativity on the Northwest Coast is an
exhibition currently under development for the new gallery, and is
expected to opening in summer 2009. Both the Gallery and the
exhibition are initiatives of the Bill Reid Foundation.
To carry forward the exhibition development currently underway for
Continuum: Vision and Creativity on the Northwest Coast, the Bill Reid
Foundation is looking to contract a consulting curator who has
collaborative exhibition development experience to work with 23
artists and four communities to develop a coherent exhibition.
Familiarity with the art, culture and communities of the Northwest
Coast will be an asset. Dr. George MacDonald will work with the
consulting curator to shape the final exhibition.
We strongly encourage Aboriginal candidates to apply.
This contract is the equivalent of a half-time position for 20 months.
The position is based in Vancouver, BC. Out-of-town candidates will be
given consideration, although it should be noted that there is no
extra funding available to support travel or living expenses for the
curator when their presence is required in Vancouver.
Deliverables/ Scope of Work:
*Exhibition research, including community collaboration (some travel
involved) with community partners : the Haida Gwaii Museum in Qay
Llnagaay, U'mista Cultural Society and Frieda Diesing School of Art
and Design; *Write exhibition text and catalogue essay; *Liaise with
designers and artists (deliverables: closing contracts for all
commissioned artists and designers; correspond with artists and
designers re : Continuum events and activities); carry out related
correspondence ; *In consultation with participating communities,
select from Continuum artists for artists in residence and and manage
the related budget. *Arrangements for the installation and scheduling
of related artist activities for installation artist; *Arrangements
for delivery of art and shipping; *Some media, spokesperson activity ;
*Project budget management ; *Project reporting.
This is a fee-based consulting contract.
