Nanaimo Art Gallery 30^th Anniversary
Permanent Art Collection Exhibition
150 Commercial Street
September 16 – 28
Opening: Sunday September 16^th at 4:30pm
What do E. J. Hughes, Bill Reid and B.C. Binning; all well-known
national visual artists have in common? They all have art work in the
Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Permanent Art Collection!
To celebrate its’ 30^th Anniversary, the Nanaimo Art Gallery is
exhibiting a selection of its works on paper from the permanent art
collection for the first time. This exhibition will take place from
September 16^th to the 28^th at the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s downtown location,
150 Commercial Street.
Since that first acquisition the Nanaimo Art Gallery has grown to an
eclectic collection of over 97 works of art encompassing a variety of
art mediums: there are 58 works on paper, 12 paintings, 26 photographs
and a piece of sculpture. The art works deal with a variety of subject
matter including figurative, landscape and animal themes, portraits,
still life, and abstract work. Included in the collection are 10 works
from First Nations artists.
The collection features the work of Wang Jinglong, Charles H. Scott,
B.C. Binning, Bill Reid, E.J. Hughes, Jack Chambers, Mary Okheena, Akira
Fujioka and Lawrence Paul.
The mandate of the Nanaimo Art Gallery permanent art collection is to
help nurture the history and tradition of fine arts practice in Nanaimo
and Central Vancouver Island.
The beginnings of the collection started in 1985 with the acquisition,
from the Eaton Foundation, of a small watercolour and ink sketch by
Lloyd Witham. The focus of our collection is to build, maintain and
exhibit art works of past and present Central Island visual artists as
well as acquire work from across Canada and internationally.
