* In Love with “The Sound of Brass”*
* *
*/Delta, BC/** *– Jim Love’s passion for music and the history that
comes with it, inspired him to research, write and publish his new book,
/“The Sound of Brass: Ladner, British Columbia 1889-1912”./ Roll back
the years on May 3 at the Delta Museum and Archives as Love speaks about
this harmonious history of these early bands.
/“The Sound of Brass”/ looks at the first two community bands in Ladner,
the Delta Brass Band (1899 to 1891) and the Ladner Cornet Band (1900 to
1912), and the important roles that they played in the social life of
the community at a time when Ladner was relatively isolated in spite of
the proximity of Steveston and New Westminster.
Consisting of players who were, or were to become, household names in
the municipality and beyond, these popular bands performed at socials
like May Day celebrations, strawberry socials, dances and concerts, and
attracted people from as far as New Westminster. Such events included
the Ball in Marshall Smith’s new store (the Big Store) before the
installations were in place and the garden party held in support of the
Ladner Cornet Band’s Uniform Fund.
/“The Sound of Brass”/ book launch will be held at the Delta Museum and
Archives Annex building located at 4918 Delta Street, two blocks north
of the heritage Museum building, on Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 2:00 to
3:30pm. Admission is by donation.
