Temporary Exhibition Curator

The City of Surrey’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department currently 
has a temporary contract for an Exhibition Curator at the Surrey Museum. 
The Surrey Museum is a new 24,000 sq. ft. facility, with a 1,000 sq. ft. 
temporary exhibition gallery. The Exhibition Curator will develop a 
temporary exhibition on the history, growth and development of Green 
Timbers, a unique urban forest in the heart of Surrey. Green Timbers has 
a long and varied history from a land resource that supported First 
Nations inhabitants, to an early logging lease, then the first 
Provincial Reforestation Centre (1921) and more recently a designated 
Urban Forest. A Walk in the Woods will be displayed in the Green Timbers 
Nature Centre in late 2008, in celebration of Surrey as a Cultural 
Capital of Canada. The Exhibition Curator will report to the Museum 
Manager.

In this role, typical duties include: Researching the history of the 
Green Timbers site, selecting exhibition themes and topics, identifying 
and selecting artifacts, negotiating artifact loans, selecting graphic 
material to illustrate themes, writing text and labels, developing the 
exhibition layout and design. The successful candidate will be familiar 
with the principles and practice of exhibition research, design and 
development, heritage interpretation, community development methods; 
must possess demonstrated abilities to multi-task, establish critical 
paths, track details, meet deadlines and achieve project deliverables.

Applicants must have a relevant educational background in Museum 
Studies, Anthropology, Material History or Forestry Studies; superior 
written and oral communication skills; organization abilities, 
collaborative team skills and an energetic approach to exhibition 
creation are required. This is a temporary position that will run 
February 2008 - October 2008.
